1958年11月15日，雷锋来到了鞍山钢铁公司，被分配到洗煤车间当了一名推土机手。秉持着湖南人吃得苦的精神，在鞍钢工作1年零2个月的时间里，雷锋曾3次被评为先进工作者，5次被评为红旗手，18次被评为节约标兵。
On November 15, 1958, Lei Feng came to Anshan Iron and Steel Corporation. He was assigned as a bulldozer in the coal washing workshop. Committed to the Hunan people's spirit of hard-working, Lei Feng won an advanced worker three times, a red-banner pacemaker five times, and a saving model eighteen times.
次年8月，雷锋主动申请去条件艰苦的弓长岭焦化厂，并凭借优良作风，很快成为焦化厂的骨干工人。在雷锋的不懈坚持之下，1960年1月8日，他如愿加入了中国人民解放军。入伍后雷锋更加严格要求自己，不久就被分配到了运输连当汽车兵，凭借过硬的驾驶技术，被评为五级汽车驾驶员。
Lei Feng took the initiative to apply for Gongchangling Coking Plant with arduous conditions in August of the following year. He soon became a backbone worker of his fine conduct. With relentless perseverance, he joined the People's Liberation Army on January 8, 1960, as he had been wishing. After joining the army, he was more strict with himself and soon was transferred to the transport company as a car solider. By virtue of his excellent driving skills, he was rated as a five-level car driver.

雷锋多才多艺，琴棋书画样样都行。他经常为部队投稿，1960年，雷锋还将参加体育比赛后的留影寄给雷明光以表养育之恩。大家一直以来都有一个误区，认为雷锋是牺牲后才被树立的典型，其实不然。由于在工作上的出色表现，雷锋多次在部队中立功受奖，其先进事迹也在各类刊物中宣传，早在1960年已成为沈阳军区的典型和标兵。
Lei Feng was a man of many talents, such as accordion, harmonica and writing. He also contributed articles for the troops. In 1960, Lei Feng sent his uncle Lei Mingguang, a photo of himself after participating in a sports competition, to express his gratitude for his upbringing. People have always had a misunderstanding that Lei Feng was not a model until he laid down his life. But it is not true. Due to his outstanding performance at work, Lei Feng was awarded many times in the army, and his advanced deeds were publicized in various periodicals. As early as 1960, he became a model and pacemaker in the Shenyang Military Area.
然而，1962年一场意外降临在雷锋身上。为了冲洗汽车的泥巴，全神贯注指挥乔安山开车的雷锋被方木柱子压倒，经抢救无效，不幸身亡。得知这一噩耗，大家举行了隆重的仪式为其送行。雷锋虽生命有限，但其精神长存。
However, an accident befell Lei Feng in 1962. In order to wash the mud on the car, Lei Feng who was absorbed in instructing Qiao Anshan to drive was crushed by the square wood pillar. Unfortunately, He died despite emergency rescue efforts. Hearing the grievous news, people held a solemn ceremony to bade farewell to him. Although Lei Feng's life is limited, his spirit is everlasting.
